Getting festive for the holidays

Seven ways to celebrate in true Aussie style

It’s no secret that 2020 hasn’t been the year that most had planned for. There have been more downs than ups, but as the year draws to a close let’s work on turning that around! For all of us living in Queensland at the moment, we are very lucky to have freedom, an abundance of sunshine and the Christmas holidays ahead of us!

Christmas is a very special time of year, and what better place to spend it than the Sunshine State! It’s such a fantastic place to be over the holiday season, as there is a buzz of excitement everywhere you go, and the weather is always balmy so you can really make the most of your time off study and work, and explore the beautiful surroundings.

I’ve spent many summers exploring the coastline and enjoying events around Brisbane throughout December, so I’ve compiled a list of my favourite Christmas activities, to really get you in the festive spirit.

Sing along at The Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carols

Get your singing voices ready, as Santa Claus is coming to town! This year the Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carols will take place on December 5 from 4:00pm – 9:00pm at the Brisbane Riverstage in the city. Bring a picnic blanket, and your best singing voice, for a cosy night of carols. Click here for more details.

Follow the lights at The Enchanted Garden

Brisbane’s Roma Street Parklands come to life in December and January when more than 40,000 fairy lights are installed throughout the park as part of The Enchanted Garden event. The result is a magical maze you can follow., There are also food trucks available, if you want to make a night out of it.! This free event runs from December 4 – January 17, but be sure to book your free ticket in advance to ensure you don’t miss out. Click here for more details

Hit the beach and make a sandman

Summer holidays in Queensland wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the beach! The Gold Coast is home to kilometres of soft white sandy beaches, and you’re guaranteed long and hot days in December. Cool down, while getting into the Christmas spirit, by constructing a jolly sandman! (Like the classic Christmas snowman, but made of sand). Discover the great outdoors

We’re certainly not short of natural beauty here in South East Queensland. There are many hiking trails to explore, all just a short drive from Brisbane or the Gold Coast. If I can suggest one thing though, it would be to head off early in the day. December is one of the hottest months in Australia, so set those alarms and enjoy the cool early mornings. Plenty of local hikes offer stunning waterfalls along the way, so bring those bathing suits too. I took the below photo in Springbrook National Park, along the Twin Falls circuit. Do you love Christmas concerts? Then this one’s for you! From the 18-23 December, the South Bank Piazza will transform into a magical Christmas wonderland, complete with songs, dancing and circus acts! For a full schedule of events, click here.

Stock up on gifts at the Gold Coast’s Christmas markets After a tough year, it’s always great to get out and support local businesses. From gift ideas to arts and crafts and delicious local produce, you can always pick up something special at the Christmas markets, while enjoying the buzz of the silly season.
