I’d like to start by saying that I’m a huge fan of the movie “Into the Wild”. Though, if I have to be completely honest, before I came to Australia I never really found the time and courage to pack my bag and set up camp somewhere far away from the city.
It was only when my friends suggested that we go camping during our mid-trimester break that I decided to finally do it.
And so, my first camping experience took place in South-East Queensland in a beautiful camping spot close to Mount Barney. The location is fairly close to Brisbane with a lot to see and enjoy, which makes it the perfect place for a beginner such as myself.
Highlights of our trip:
1. Setting up camp
The first thing my friends and I did when we arrived at the location was to set up our camp. You might think that it’s an easy task but believe me, when you do it for the first time, it can turn into a struggle. Thankfully I had my friends with me who had gone camping a couple of times before and were able to show me a few tricks.
My tip for you would be to make sure that you have the right gear and if for some reason the task gets too difficult for you, just remember that you’re doing it for the sake of having fun!
2. Bonding with nature and friends
Honestly the best part of camping is about turning off your phone and enjoying your surroundings in the good company of your friends. It is a very relaxing activity and it helps you appreciate the little things in life.
For example, what impressed me the most during our camping trip was how amazing the night sky was and how clearly you could see the thousands of different stars. It is truly a view worthy of experiencing.
3. Going on a hike
On the third day of our camping trip we decided to go on a hike in Mount Barney. During the hike, my friends and I were very lucky as we reached an area with a waterfall squeezed between the rocks of the mountain. Even though the water was a bit chilly, we decided to take a dip in it and were definitely not left disappointed.
If you are wondering, you don’t need to be experienced to hike in this location but I would recommend that you pack your swimwear and a pair of comfortable shoes.
4. Starting a campfire
If you do decide to go camping after reading this article, make sure to find a camping spot where campfires are permitted. It’s definitely one of my favorite things about camping because it creates a warm and cozy environment. I mean who doesn’t like a campfire and some melted marshmallows – Yum!
Overall, camping in Australia was one of the best experiences of my life. I definitely recommend it because it’s affordable, adventurous and most importantly it’s heaps of fun. So what are you waiting for? Pack your bag and experience the magic of camping yourself!
