“Say yes and you’ll figure it out afterwards.” – Tina Fey
That quote sums up how people should be living their lives if they want to move forward either personally or professionally. I am a big supporter of fake it until you make it. Saying yes to things that I was not entirely confident about has lead me to some of my favorite past times. If I wouldn’t have told my sister that I could accomplish taking pictures for her yearbook, then I wouldn’t have fallen in love with photography.
Putting yourself out there is hard and scary, but it doesn’t have to be an all day, everyday thing. Look at things that you would like to improve, like introducing yourself to strangers or being more involved with the company you work for, and find ways to make it happen. It is really all about faking it until you make it. The more you tell yourself that you are confident enough to go out and do things with every time you do it, it will feel more real and just like part of who you are. The confidence and skills that you are looking for will come to you from going out and taking on new experiences.Do not tell yourself that you can’t do something because it’s too hard or scary. The best things in life come from stepping outside of what is normal and comfortable.
So, the next time your boss asks for someone to do a project and you think you can accomplish it, then stand up and say yes! Do not miss out on life and other opportunities because saying no and avoiding little failures is easier. Here are some things that you should be saying yes to if you aren’t already:
- New projects at work
- Jobs that are slightly out of your area of expertise
- Dates
- Learning a new skill/hobby
- Adventures with new people
- New food
- Going to see plays, movies, comedy shows, etc.
- New haircuts
- Any outdoors activity
- Any chance to learn something
So, go out and try new things! Fake it until you make it! It’ll make you into the better person you always wanted to be. Let us know if you start trying any of these new things and how it goes for you.
