Staying Connected: How to support an international student in Australia

When your child, partner or friend begins their journey at Griffith University, it’s natural to feel a mix of pride and nerves. While they step into a world of new experiences, your support continues to make an enormous difference, even from another continent! Staying connected and providing support doesn’t have to be complicated; it’s about being present in small, thoughtful ways that remind them they’re never truly alone.

Stay connected in simple, meaningful ways

Distance doesn’t have to mean disconnection. A few consistent habits can help you both feel close, no matter the kilometres between you.

  • Schedule regular calls or video chats, often enough to stay updated but not so often that it interrupts their new independence. Navigating time zones can sometimes make this a challenge in the beginning but you’ll soon find a rhythm that works for you both.
  • Swap photos of simple, everyday moments. What’s cooking for dinner, a weekend walk, or the family pet’s latest antics, these little snapshots can help keep home feeling familiar.
  • Once your student has settled in, send letters or care packages with their favourite treats from home. A handwritten note or some familiar snacks can brighten their week and show you’re thinking of them.
  • Create digital traditions and use tech to stay in touch. Try a weekly meme exchange, recipe swap, or challenge each other over an online game like Words with Friends. Small rituals like these help you feel connected from a distance. Sometimes it’s the small touchpoints that can make a big difference.

Encourage independence and growth

University life is full of firsts, with new routines, new friends and new challenges. Encourage your student to make the most of this chapter.

  • Celebrate achievements, no matter how small. A quick message after a presentation or exam can mean a lot.
  • Be curious about what they’re learning and discovering, without taking the lead in solving every problem.
  • Let them guide the conversation when challenges come up. Listening without judgement can help build confidence and resilience.
  • Remind them that setbacks are part of the journey, and that you believe in their ability to find solutions.

Stay involved with Griffith

Knowing what’s happening at Griffith helps families and friends feel part of the community too.

  • Follow Griffith University’s social channels or subscribe to newsletters like the Explore Blog for campus stories and updates. Staying connected will give you lots to talk about and you might even catch a glimpse of your loved one on our channels!
  • Learn about the support services available and encourage child, partner or friends to engage with them when needed. Griffith offers a range of wellbeing, academic and career resources to help students thrive. If your student ever needs extra support, direct them to griffith.edu.au/student-support.
  • Mark down key dates and important milestones for your student. Orientation, mid-trimester breaks and graduation are perfect opportunities to connect, visit or celebrate together.

Your Support Still Matters Most

Your ongoing encouragement, whether it’s a message, a phone call or a care package, helps the student in your life feel grounded and supported. You’re both part of the Griffith story, united by a shared goal of building a brighter future for all. Distance may change how you connect, but it never lessens how much your support matters.
