Micah Suba, one of Griffith University’s Filipino students, was recently awarded the 2023 Rotary Club of Southport Cyril Richarde AM International Scholarship, worth $5,000, for her dedication to community service.
Southport Rotary has had a long commitment to assisting youth nationally and internationally. Cyril Richarde was a national pioneer in international Rotary humanitarian service. Through the creation of the Rotary Club of Southport Cyril Richarde AM International Scholarship, the Club aims to support a student who demonstrates a commitment to community service.
After graduating high school from the Philippines, Micah had the desire to study nursing abroad. Throughout her stay here in Australia, she’s embraced opportunities and started involving herself more with the Griffith community, volunteering for Griffith Mates, working for Griffith International as a Student Ambassador, and being a peer mentor for her nursing cohort.
“These experiences have been enjoyable and humbling as an international student, and Griffith University will always have a place in my heart,” she explained.
Micah generously answered five quick questions about her time at Griffith so far, and here are her responses.
Why did you choose to study at Griffith University?
I chose to study at Griffith University because they have a good reputation in providing support and services for international students which includes, in my case, scholarships.
What do you love most about the nursing program at Griffith University?
I love the simulation labs most, because they are made to look like a hospital setting, the only difference is that you can make mistakes and learn from them. I also love how supportive the nursing teaching staff are.
Do the practical and placement elements of the nursing program enhance your learning, and if yes, how?
The clinical practicums are a really great opportunity to consolidate any gaps in your theory learnings from university. You also get to collaborate with patients and interprofessional team members such as doctors, physiotherapists, pharmacists, and many more.
Do you feel supported by your teachers at Griffith?
Yes, my teachers support me in my studies because they understand that each student has different circumstances. Whenever I would struggle at times, I would send them an email and they would be understanding and provide you with university resources such as Griffith Health, Counselling and Wellbeing.
Do you have any other feedback about your experience studying nursing at Griffith University?
The nursing education at Griffith University continues to inspire me to be a good nurse in the future. They lay the foundations of nursing for you and continue to consolidate them throughout the degree.
I can confidently say, they have shaped who I am today as a third-year nursing student. I feel more confident, capable, and challenged to provide safe and quality care to people who are in need of health care.
