Five fun things to do in Brisbane during the break

Trimester break is here – time to relax, recharge and explore! Whether you’re living in Brisbane or just planning a day trip, here are five fun ideas to help you unwind and enjoy the city during the winter break.

    1. Discover Brisbane’s Cultural Precinct at South Bank

Spend a day exploring South Bank – Brisbane’s vibrant cultural heart. Wander through the lush parklands, visit free exhibitions at the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA), or catch a film at the heritage-listed Cineplex for under $10. You can stroll along the river, grab a bite from one of the many cafes and food stalls, or even ride The Wheel of Brisbane for panoramic city views. It’s the perfect mix of culture, nature, and chill time – all in one place.

    2. Spot Whales off the Coast of Redcliffe

Whale watching season starts in mid-June, and there’s no better time to witness the incredible sight of humpback whales migrating along Queensland’s coast. Tours depart daily from Redcliffe Jetty and typically last 3–4 hours. You’ll get up close (but safely distanced) views of these gentle giants, plus commentary from marine experts on board. Don’t forget your camera – seeing a whale breach is a moment worth capturing. Bonus: many operators offer student discounts if you book midweek!

    3. Visit the Museum of Brisbane’s “New Light” Photography Exhibition

If you’re in the mood for something creative, head to the Museum of Brisbane inside City Hall. Their current exhibition, New Light: Photography Now + Then, runs until October and features a fascinating blend of historical and contemporary photographic works. The best part? It’s free! After your visit, take some time to explore nearby King George Square or grab a coffee in one of the CBD’s laneway cafés, Brew Cafe & Wine Bar in Burnett Lane is a hidden gem!

    4. Eat Your Way Around Eat Street Northshore

Looking for a fun night out? Eat Street Northshore is a must-do experience. Open Friday to Sunday nights, this riverside market is packed with more than 70 food stalls serving everything from dumplings and donuts to tacos and wood-fired pizza. Enjoy live music, fairy lights, and a buzzing atmosphere with friends. Entry is just $5, and you can get there easily by CityCat ferry or bus. Don’t miss Lulu’s Candied Fruit after dinner for skewered, fresh-dipped delights, perfect for Instagram!

    5. Climb the Story Bridge at Sunset

For the adventurous, take in Brisbane from new heights with a Story Bridge Adventure Climb. Guided climbs run daily, and the twilight sessions offer stunning sunset views over the Brisbane River and city skyline. It’s a safe and unforgettable way to see the city, and a great option if you want to tick something big off your bucket list. Student pricing is available, and all gear is provided – just bring your sense of adventure!

    A few extra tips

    • Public transport is your budget-friendly friend – use a go card for trains, ferries and buses.
    • Brisbane’s winter days average 11-22°C, but nights get chilly on the river so pack an extra layer for cruises and climbs.
    • Most venues offer concession pricing; flash your Griffith student ID to save.

No matter what your budget or interests are, there’s plenty to explore in Brisbane during the break. Enjoy your time off and we’ll see you back on campus re-charged and full of stories!
